In mid-June, ScoreVision welcomed nearly 30 students from 10 different ScoreVision schools to participate in our first annual ScoreVision Academy Summer Creative Camp. Hosted on the beautiful campus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO), students enjoyed top-notch instruction from our Creative Team on topics like graphic design, video production, animation, and operating the ScoreVision jumbotron system in UNO’s state-of-the-art facilities.

The 3-day camp brought students together from across the country who had never met before, helping them develop new friendships while they sharpened their design skills. ScoreVision’s goal was twofold: to teach skills that would benefit these students if they decide to pursue careers in graphic design, media production, broadcasting, or related fields; and to inspire and empower these students to create amazing content for their ScoreVision systems, get involved with game production at their schools, and motivate other fellow students to get involved when the new school year begins. Many teachers and other staff members also attended to serve as chaperones for the camp, learn about our software, and many even jumped in to help reinforce concepts with students.

"UNO was a wonderful environment to help the kids excel and be immersed! We can't say enough about how great the ScoreVision Summer Camp experience was as a whole," said Josh Orlando, Multi-Media Supervisor at Boys & Girls Club of Central AZ and camp chaperone from Prescott High School.

Sunday

After a long day of flying and driving into Omaha, students got checked in, toured the UNO dorms, and headed to ScoreVision HQ to see our office, play with the jumbotrons and production app that would display their creative content, and meet each other through fun icebreaker games.

Monday

Students got up bright and early for a full day of learning at Mammel Hall. The day began with a welcome speech from the dean of UNO’s College of Business Administration, Louis Pol. Then the Creative Team jumped right into teaching the students about creating their very own “Starter Pack” of graphics and content for their ScoreVision jumbotrons, how to create an engaging fan experience at their schools, and how to use industry-standard software like Adobe Photoshop to create everything from sponsor ads to graphics to scoreboard background wrappers. Campers finished off the night with some bowling and laser tag at The Mark.

Tuesday

The second full day of camp began with a tour of UNO’s campus with stops at each building. The group focused on the media lab at Criss Library, exploring the incredible equipment and technology available to UNO students, including animation software, 3D printing, green screens, sound recording, photography, virtual reality, and more. The group then headed to lunch at Milo Bail Student Center where a member of our Customer Support and Operations team with years of game production experience gave a talk to the students about the importance of developing a script for games and events, as well as tips on creating engaging experiences for fans on game day. After the lunch and learn session, students returned to the library for more instruction and to work on their Starter Pack projects. The day concluded with a tour of the production control facilities at Baxter Arena, UNO’s premier sporting and event facility in the heart of Omaha. After all the activities of the day, campers were given free time to relax, unwind, play games, or watch movies, though many of them chose to continue working on their projects – after all, the student who showcased the best effort and creativity during the week would win a free iPad at the end of camp!

Wednesday

On the final day of camp, students spent the day polishing their projects in preparation for their presentations and the awards ceremony that would occur later that night. Around dinner time, campers headed to ScoreVision HQ for a fun-filled night of games, BBQ, and live music from the BluesEd jazz band (sponsored by Sarah Fruehling). The Starter Packs full of graphics, animations, videos, and other creative elements that each camper developed during camp were loaded into our Producer App to be presented by each camper on our office jumbotrons. Mason Pennington of Prescott High School won first place and Kylee Willis of Blue Springs High School won second place for a combination of their creative skills and their contributions to others during camp. Mason received a 12.9” iPad, leather case, and Apple Pencil for first place and Kylee received a 10.5” iPad Pro and a case.Check out our short recap video below to see more photo and video clips from this amazing week!
